Somerton Beekeepers’ Association’s introductory beekeeping course is getting closer.
The theory part of the course will be held at Tor Rugby Club, Lowerside Lane, Glastonbury, BA6 9BH on the following dates - Wednesdays January 11th, 18th and 25th, then Wednesdays February 1st, 8th & 15th. The evenings start at 7.30 pm and usually end around 9.00 pm.
We cover all aspects of beekeeping, beehives and honey gathering. If you want to take up beekeeping or have recently acquired bees, and need to know more, this is the course for you. The charge for the entire course is £20.00 and this also includes Associate Membership of Somerton Beekeepers’ Association for 2017, but we strongly advise that if you progress to keeping bees, you upgrade to a full membership, as this gives untold advantages with insurance cover alone.
Following on from the theory sessions, we hold ‘hands on’ practical sessions which normally start around the beginning of April, and continue through the beekeeping season. These are held in our apiary at Upton, near Long Sutton on Saturday mornings. They are planned to coincide with key points in the beekeeping season, and you should, if you wish to, be ready to receive your first colony of bees after the second session.
We try to raise starter colonies for our new beekeepers, and pass them on at very reasonable prices – way below the market rate. We will let you know more about this in the future.
