Somerset beekeeper awarded ‘best in show’ at the Royal Bath & West
A Somerset beekeeper has been left buzzing after receiving the Royal Bath & West’s Blue Ribbon for the best exhibit in the honey show.
Bridget Knutson, from Cheddar, received the prestigious accolade awarded jointly by the British Beekeepers’ Association and the National Honey Show.
“I am absolutely delighted to have won the best in show!” said Bridget, who has been keeping bees for the past 11 years.
Her dazzling display of hive products wowed the judges, beat hundreds of other exhibits and was also awarded the Owen Bishop Perpetual Cup.
Presented in a hexagonal, glass-fronted cabinet, there were four flavours of mead, three types of honey displayed in a variety of jars, wax candles and decorative plaques.
“In all I made about 50 items and everything was created from the honey and wax collected from our nine bee hives,” she added.
Bridget, who is the librarian of the Kings of Wessex Academy, Cheddar, plans to show pupils her trophy.
Fellow Somerset beekeeper Suzy Perkins from Langport was also a big winner; her exceptional honey and mead impressed the judges and she was awarded three major trophies.
Beekeepers from five counties competed at the Bath & West in classes spanning honey, wax, mead and cookery.
